When the garden of our hearts are filled with stones and lack depth, we are like what Jesus described: \u201cWhen trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away.\u201d (Matthew 13:21)<\/h2>\n

We know that we should be faithful and loving, yet it might not always be easy and convenient. Sometimes the challenge is to get rid of a sinful habit; or to forgive someone who has hurt or betrayed us deeply; or be truly generous with our time, energy and money when we don't even have enough for our own. Other times it could be to risk our reputation in order to bring truth and justice to others. Jesus has already warned us of trials and persecutions along the way as we follow Him. How far can we go with our Lord without silently falling away?<\/h2>\n

The good news is we can find strength and wisdom in our Lord. Jesus said His Word is \u201cspirit and life\u201d (John 6:63). Through this retreat, we have already taken the first steps to keep His Word. As we strive to let His Word remain in our hearts, He abides in us and we in Him, and in God, nothing is impossible. If we are willing to repent and invite God into those rocky areas of our hearts, the conditions of our hearts will surely change for the better.<\/h2>\n

The Purpose of Parables.<\/strong>

But here he sounds like he wants to reserve his words to a special group. The Catechism<\/i> explains, \u201cThrough his parables he invites people to the feast of the kingdom, but he also asks for a radical choice: to gain the kingdom, one must give everything. Words are not enough, deeds are required\u2026 One must enter the kingdom, that is, become a disciple of Christ, in order to ‘know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven’. For those who stay ‘outside’, everything remains enigmatic.\u201d (CCC 546)<\/h2>\n
