The Parable of the Sower is also known as the Parable of the Soils<\/b>. Jesus used this parable to focus our attention on the conditions of the soil in our hearts. Now, we first need to understand the importance of soil in supporting plant growth. Soil has two main functions: to supply and hold nutrients<\/b>; and to provide anchorage <\/b>for a plant. Good soil allows for a strong, healthy root system to form, which makes for a stable plant as it grows bigger.\u00a0<\/h2>\n

In the same way, the main nutrient for our faith is God\u2019s Word<\/i><\/b> without which our spiritual lives will wither. The anchorage is the Sacraments and Eucharistic celebrations<\/i><\/b>; faith communities and groups<\/i><\/b> from which we draw support. On a personal level, anchorage comes from our prayer life, lifestyle, habits and routines<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0<\/h2>\n

The condition of the soil in our heart also indicates the condition of our souls! As we prepare to dig deeper in this spiritual journey, let us take our soil seriously by examining our lives for weak links that hinder the growth of our faith and thus an intimate relationship with Christ.<\/h2>\n

6 and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots.
7 Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it.

The Purpose of Parables.<\/strong>
10 The disciples approached him and said, \u201cWhy do you speak to them in parables?\u201d
11 He said to them in reply, \u201cBecause knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been granted to you, but to them it has not been granted.
12 To anyone who has, more will be given* and he will grow rich; from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
13 This is why I speak to them in parables, because \u2018they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand.\u2019 14 Isaiah\u2019s prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says: \u2018You shall indeed hear but not understand, you shall indeed look but never see.
15 Gross is the heart of this people, they will hardly hear with their ears, they have closed their eyes, lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and be converted, and I heal them.\u2019<\/p>\n

But here he sounds like he wants to reserve his words to a special group. The Catechism<\/i> explains, \u201cThrough his parables he invites people to the feast of the kingdom, but he also asks for a radical choice: to gain the kingdom, one must give everything. Words are not enough, deeds are required\u2026 One must enter the kingdom, that is, become a disciple of Christ, in order to ‘know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven’. For those who stay ‘outside’, everything remains enigmatic.\u201d (CCC 546)<\/h2>\n

Becoming a disciple means entering into a relationship with Jesus. As we spend more time with him and get to know him better, he tells us amazing things that those who stay \u201coutside\u201d will never hear.<\/h1>\n
