They met a lady on the road who needed help to cross a river. One of the monks carried her on his back, crossed the river, put her down, and continued on the road. After a while, he noticed that the other monk seemed to be upset. When asked, the other monk replied, &#8220;As a monk, you should keep a distance from women. How come you carried that lady across the river?&#8221; The monk replied, &#8220;I have put the lady down a long time ago. Why are you still carrying her?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Blockquote&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Indeed, the unbearable burdens in our life are our <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>\u201cattachments\u201d<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the things we have been reminded to rid ourselves of in this Lenten Retreat, and is the second condition to achieve the goal of this retreat, that is, we must learn to \u201clet go\u201d.\u00a0 We have many \u201cattachments\u201d in our life that lead to our accumulation of \u201cmany things\u201d physically, mentally, and spiritually; we are helpless under their powerful bondage.\u00a0 All these things distract us from focusing our energy on the more important things.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Blockquote&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>These \u201cattachments\u201d eventually become our <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>\u201cidols\u201d<\/strong><\/span>, above God, whom we worship.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/lent.fll.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/cell-phone.jpg&#8221; title_text=&#8221;cell-phone&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.6&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>A simple test can reveal what our \u201cidols\u201d are: <strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">if the time and energy we spend on these \u201cidols\u201d are greater than the time and thoughts we put on God, these things or people are our \u201cidols\u201d.<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the more severe situations, when our enjoyment of these objects, whether those be things or people, progresses beyond hobbies to obsessions,\u00a0 they will eventually become our <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>\u201caddictions\u201d<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Blockquote&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Our addiction to these hobbies and obsessions, in fact, has replaced God as our <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>\u201cgods\u201d<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 These \u201cgods\u201d also hold immense power over our decisions and our time; they render us powerless to walk away and focus on what we need to do.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>This is our warning of the \u201cattachment-trap\u201d!<\/p>\n<p>Our excessive attachment to material things, like the \u201caccumulation\u201d of material things, can be rectified easily, relatively speaking.\u00a0 Contrarily, mental attachments, such as our individual<span style=\"color: #800080;\"> <strong>\u201cdesires\u201d<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>\u201cpreferences\u201d<\/strong><\/span>, require a greater willpower to resist. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Blockquote&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Other more severe mental attachments may include our being judgemental of others, biases, jealousy, and the most difficult one, <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>our reluctance to \u201cforgive\u201d<\/strong><\/span>. The list goes on and on. All these attachments bind us, deny us of the freedom to love and to choose, and <strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">enslave<\/span> <\/strong>us under these \u201cidols\u201d and \u201cgods\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>In the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 16 Verse 13, Jesus says,<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_testimonial author=&#8221;(Luke 16:13)&#8221; disabled_on=&#8221;off|off|off&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Bible verse&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; body_text_color=&#8221;#FFFFFF&#8221; author_text_color=&#8221;#FFFFFF&#8221; background_color=&#8221;#d43b3e&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;bounce&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_testimonial][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Blockquote&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>No one can serve two masters.\u00a0 If we choose anything other than our Creator God as our \u201cmaster\u201d, we are abandoning the God, our Abba Father, our<span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong> true master<\/strong><\/span> who has not only created us, but also loves and cherishes us. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>If we allow ourselves to be separated from God, we will lose touch with the fountain of all goodness and grace.\u00a0 As a result, we will fall victim to temptations in the hands of our enemies.<\/p>\n<p>Monkeys usually give us the impression of being witty, lively, fun-loving and naughty. Actually, monkeys are similar to humans in many ways. We can even identify some of the human weaknesses in monkeys. For instance, it turns out that a hunter can easily capture the monkey without much effort.\u00a0 All he needs to do is to cut a small hole in a coconut shell and use the monkey\u2019s favourite snack as bait and leave it inside the shell.\u00a0 When the monkey sticks his hand inside the coconut shell, his hand, forming a fist that holds the food,\u00a0 becomes stuck at the small opening.\u00a0 The hunter, taking advantage of the monkey\u2019s greed and stubbornness, is able to capture his prey with ease.\u00a0 The monkey loses his life due to his \u201cattachment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>What does this story reveal to us?\u00a0 You may say laughingly, \u201cI would never be as stupid as the monkey!\u201d\u00a0 Incidentally, are we not also wasting our precious lives away due to our attachments?\u00a0 Remember God\u2019s greatest gift for us, other than His love, it is our life; the gift of time in this world.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>If we willingly allow the insignificant things in life to rob us of our precious time to remain \u201cfocussed\u201d, we are no different than the monkey who loses his life due to the small things.\u00a0 He has, indeed, lost sight of the big picture.\u00a0 Does the monkey\u2019s decision sound worthwhile to you?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Consider the God who created us, willing to do anything for us and for our greatest benefits, and even dying willingly in our hands; how hurtful He must feel as His heart is broken by us over and over again.\u00a0 Is this what we wish for?\u00a0 Can you bear it?<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.2&#8243; in your life who are relentless in their chase for you?\u00a0 Now, you are invited to choose the most important master in your life.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Kind and merciful Abba Father, thank You for empowering me to confront my attachments, bondages, idols and other gods in my life through today\u2019s reflection.\u00a0 You have opened my eyes to recognize how all these have been holding me hostage, plunging me\u00a0 deeper into my sins, leading me further and further away from You!\u00a0 It is now that I can finally feel Your pain, Your resignation, and Your desire to save me as I keep choosing other people and things over You.\u00a0 Let me be resolute to free myself from all these bindings, so that I won\u2019t fall prey to my enemies.\u00a0 I am determined not to be blinded but to always fix my gaze on You.\u00a0 Let me not forsake Your infinite love for me.\u00a0 Father, I love You!\u00a0 Father, hear my prayer!\u00a0 Amen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
