Today, we want to explore more deeply the nature of this heart. The Psalmist tells us that <strong>God does not merely desire external sacrifices; what He truly longs for is a \u201cbroken and contrite heart.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jesus not only commands us to repent; He is also deeply drawn to those who possess such a broken heart, and He actively praises them. <\/strong>To understand why this is the key to hearing God\u2019s voice, we must look at two powerful encounters in the Gospel of Luke: the Pharisee and the tax collector, and the sinful woman in the house of Simon the Pharisee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cBut the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, \u2018God, be merciful to me, a sinner!\u2019\u201d (Luke 18:13)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cTherefore, I tell you, her sins, which were many, have been forgiven; hence she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.\u201d (Luke 7:47)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text disabled_on=&#8221;off|off|off&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Blockquote&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>St. Thomas Aquinas explains that the word \u201ccontrite\u201d literally means \u201cto be crushed into pieces.\u201d A contrite heart is one in which pride has been completely shattered by a deep awareness of one\u2019s sinfulness and a desperate longing for God.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; header_5_font=&#8221;|700|||||||&#8221; header_5_text_color=&#8221;#750059&#8243; header_5_font_size=&#8221;18px&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Consider the Pharisee in the temple. He performed all the right external religious practices\u2014fasting twice a week and giving a tenth of his income. Yet his heart had become completely hardened. He was self-righteous, contemptuous of others, and convinced that he had no need for forgiveness. His mind was filled with praise for himself, even praying, \u201cGod, I thank you that I am not like other people.\u201d As a result, he was completely deaf to God\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>The tax collector, however, stood far off, beating his breast, crushed by the weight of his own unworthiness. <strong>He relied entirely on God\u2019s mercy rather than on his own strength or religious \u201cresume\u201d.<\/strong> Jesus tells us that this man went home \u201cjustified.\u201d God will never despise a heart that has shed its pride and stands vulnerable before Him.<\/p>\n<p>St. Augustine reminds us that the true humility of a penitent is like that of Abraham, who confessed: \u201cI am but earth and ashes.\u201d When we acknowledge that we are ashes, our ears are finally open to the Good Shepherd.<\/p>\n<p>This leads us to a deeper spiritual truth about our ability to listen:<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text disabled_on=&#8221;off|off|off&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Blockquote&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>if we do not have an intimate, loving relationship with God, we cannot hear His voice.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; header_5_font=&#8221;|700|||||||&#8221; header_5_text_color=&#8221;#750059&#8243; header_5_font_size=&#8221;18px&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Think again of the sinful woman who wept at Jesus\u2019 feet. Simon the Pharisee judged her and was disgusted by her past. He considered himself a good person; he did not feel that he owed God anything.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text disabled_on=&#8221;off|off|off&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Blockquote&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>But Jesus revealed a spiritual law: \u201cThe one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; header_5_font=&#8221;|700|||||||&#8221; header_5_text_color=&#8221;#750059&#8243; header_5_font_size=&#8221;18px&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>This sinful woman clearly knew the ugliness and weight of her sins. She felt shameful, yet she had great faith that Jesus could heal her.<strong> When she experienced His lavish forgiveness, an ocean of gratitude and love was unleashed from within her heart.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text disabled_on=&#8221;off|off|off&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Blockquote&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Here lies the secret: love is the frequency on which God speaks.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; header_5_font=&#8221;|700|||||||&#8221; header_5_text_color=&#8221;#750059&#8243; header_5_font_size=&#8221;18px&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>If we are like the Pharisee\u2014believing we are \u201calready good enough\u201d and do not need forgiveness\u2014we will not be grateful.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text disabled_on=&#8221;off|off|off&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Blockquote&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Without gratitude, our love for God becomes distant, cold, and transactional.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; header_5_font=&#8221;|700|||||||&#8221; header_5_text_color=&#8221;#750059&#8243; header_5_font_size=&#8221;18px&#8221; animation_style=&#8221;fold&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>If your heart is not burning with love for Him, how can you recognize the gentle, quiet whisper of the Good Shepherd?<\/p>\n<p>The woman\u2019s sins were forgiven, and Jesus said to her, \u201cYour faith has saved you; go in peace.\u201d <strong>Her contrition instantly united her heart with the heart of Christ.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today, let us examine our spiritual lives. Do we rely on our Catholic routines\u2014such as attending Mass or saying prayers\u2014while secretly harboring within us a judgmental, self-righteous Pharisee? Do we look down on others while forgetting how deeply we ourselves need God\u2019s mercy?<\/p>\n<p>Let us ask God to give us a crushed and contrite heart. Am I willing to allow my pride to be \u201ccrushed\u201d so that God\u2019s voice can finally penetrate the walls of my self-reliance?<\/p>\n<p>Jesus said, \u201cThe one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.\u201d God has forgiven me and granted me such immense grace. Have I gradually become numb, forgetting to thank Him from the depths of my heart? Is my love for God passionate, or merely transactional?<\/p>\n<p>Am I substituting genuine sorrow for my sins with merely going through the motions of religious rituals?
